Mookhoek self-pick: let a child cut their first personal bouquet

Plukhoek Mookhoek reopens its garden on Saturdays from 8 August, 13:00-16:00. Bouquets cost EUR8.50, EUR10.25 or EUR15.50; an under-five child’s bouquet is EUR2.50.

• At the greenhouse, staff welcome pickers, provide a bucket in hot weather and lend secateurs with a short lesson. A clean cut protects stem and parent plant, so picking also teaches care for what remains.
• One side of the path holds perennials such as roses and verbena; the other has annuals including sunflowers and zinnias. Children can compare shape and stem length, not merely grab a colour.
• A mud kitchen is free. Blackberries, pears or other red fruit open only when ripe and have separate prices; staff decide where mid-August hand pears are ready to pick.
• The address is Strijensedijk 14; cars cross the small bridge to on-site parking. Expect mud, insects and pollen, wear closed shoes, bring water and note that payment is by card only.

Hokimi field note: Ask the child who the bouquet is for, then choose three main colours and name a reason for every stem. It becomes a made gift rather than a handful of flowers.
