A small catering business has booked a company dinner for fifty in early October and needs a barbecue main, one impressive beef dish and a round of beer. This Makro food folder runs from 23 September to 4 October 2026 and has 72 pages, with a clear-out page on page 2 taking 30% off selected wine and spirits.

With whole cuts sold by the kilo and drinks by the crate, a small change in unit price is tens of euros, and the large figures in a wholesale folder exclude VAT.

Three items from this edition's first four pages line up the main, the showpiece and the drinks for that dinner:

• Tonnies varkensspareribs: frozen pork spareribs in a box of about 10 kilos, from 5.49 to 4.49 a kilo, 4.89 including VAT (page 1). Thawed in the fridge the day before, cooked low until tender and then glazed on the grill, ribs are the easiest barbecue main to make in bulk, and at around 200 grams a head one box covers fifty guests.
• Zuid-Amerikaanse runderhaas 3/4: South American beef tenderloin, a piece of about 1.6 kilos, from 36.99 to 29.99 a kilo, 32.69 including VAT (page 3). Roasted whole and sliced at the table, tenderloin is the dish people remember from a dinner; it is tender and expensive, so one piece works as two or three slices each alongside the main rather than as the main itself.
• Liefmans krat: a crate of 24 bottles of 250 ml, from 39.98 to 22.99, 27.82 including VAT, while stocks last (page 4). Liefmans is a Belgian fruit beer, low in alcohol and sweet, which suits guests who do not like a bitter lager, and a small bottle is one per person with no half-empty bottles left over.

For a budget, use the small-print price including VAT and multiply by the actual weight. Filled in: a 10 kilo box of ribs is about 10 times 4.89, so 48.90; a 1.6 kilo tenderloin is about 1.6 times 32.69, so 52.30; the beer crate is 27.82, about 1.16 a bottle. Together that is about 129, or roughly 2.58 per guest for fifty, which is the floor price for the meat and beer of the evening.
