Impact through Design remains at the Philips Museum through 31 August, using a century of objects, a Gallery of Needs and a hands-on Design Lab to explain human-centred design.
What you need to know
The Chapel radio, Infraphil lamp, compact disc and sensor toothbrush do not sit together merely as dates. The exhibition follows needs such as reassurance, simplicity, expression and connection, asking how buttons, grip, sound and medical interfaces changed everyday behaviour. This is not a complete corporate history, and progress should not be credited to one designer. The story deliberately uses a Philips perspective; comparing it with products visitors actually used creates a more critical visit. For Hokimi, the Design Lab is the test. Trying to design for a future need after seeing famous objects reveals whether “user centred” is a method or just a slogan. The exhibition continues through 31 August.
