Eye(s) Open runs through 6 September: eleven artists make ten new works from roughly two thousand colonial-era films from Indonesia and Suriname; standard admission is €16.

What you need to know

Before entering, the most useful question is not whether an old film is “real”, but who held the camera, who was arranged in front of it and whose voice disappeared. The installations return healthcare, faith, labour and embodied memory to images that an archive can otherwise present as neutral evidence. The artists do not provide one final correct reading. Some works address colonial violence, illness and racialised bodies. The exhibition connects to films and talks, yet those events can have separate times and tickets. Hokimi recommends staying with one work long enough to notice its method, then tracing the power structure in the source material; rushing through ten installations produces less understanding.

  • The exhibition runs 3 April–6 September.
  • Eleven artists made ten works from about 2,000 colonial-era films.
  • Standard exhibition admission is €16, with other categories available.
  • Summer opening generally reaches 19:00, but live hours must be checked.
