What you need to know
Handing a child to a familiar home-based carer depends on trust, but “she is lovely” cannot replace a safety process. The new rules make daily pedagogy, records and emergency cover explainable. Each childminder needs seven hours of annual development and at least three hours of coaching from each agency, normally working with no more than two agencies. Emergency cover must generally arrive within fifteen minutes, and development records need privacy choices. From July, childminders need a pedagogical plan, annual training and coaching; parents should verify agency limits, emergency cover and privacy consent. That distinction matters because the practical decision depends on current conditions, not on the headline alone.
- The requirements took effect on 1 July 2026.
