What you need to know
The bottom shelf of the fridge always holds half a block of cheese, the end of a pack of bacon and a handful of green beans, and two weeks later they are thrown out not because they spoiled but because they dried out, took on other smells or got freezer burn. The Caso VC10 is an external suction vacuum sealer: you put food in a bag, lay the open end in the vacuum chamber, press the lid down, and the machine draws to roughly 90 per cent, minus 0.8 bar, before heat-sealing the seam. It costs EUR 61.55 on Amazon.nl, sold and shipped by Amazon, rated 4.5 from 21,119 reviews, of which 75 per cent are five stars and 3 per cent one star.
Caso is a German kitchen-appliance brand from the Sauerland whose main line is vacuum sealing and sous vide, and it positions the VC10 as the entry model. The design rests on two controls you operate yourself: a vacuum stop button that halts suction at any point and goes straight to sealing, which the manufacturer recommends for berries, salad leaves and pastry that a full vacuum would crush, and a separate seal-only button that welds without drawing air at all, used for food going into the freezer. The seal is about 30 cm wide, so roll film can be cut to any length; the pump moves 9 litres a minute at 110 W, the body is 36 x 15.5 x 9 cm and weighs 1.3 kg, and it ships with ten 20 x 30 cm original bags and a hose that fits Caso vacuum containers.
What really decides whether it is worth it is the consumable, and the product page will not do that sum for you. Caso professional bags are EUR 16.99 on Amazon.nl, which the page itself prices at EUR 0.34 each, and original rolls are EUR 17.43 for two, EUR 8.72 a roll. That gives a simple threshold: at EUR 0.34 a bag, whatever goes inside has to be worth more than that. The payback sum is machine price divided by (the value of food you currently throw away each week minus the weekly bag cost). Seal four bags a week and the bags cost 4 x 0.34 = EUR 1.36; if that stops EUR 5 of food going in the bin each week, the net saving is EUR 3.64 and 61.55 / 3.64 is about 17 weeks. Replace the EUR 5 with the real number from your own fridge and the answer moves: at EUR 2 a week it takes 96 weeks.
- How the range differs: in the manufacturer comparison table, the VR 190 Advanced at EUR 59.11, the VC 10 at EUR 61.55 and the VC 10 Plus Edition at EUR 89.90 share the same wattage, pump rate, seal width and body size, and the Plus adds 25 bags instead of 10, worth about EUR 5.10 at EUR 0.34 each while costing EUR 28.35 more; the genuine step up is the VRH 490 Advanced at EUR 77.09 with 12 litres a minute and a removable drip tray. - What it is poor at: external suction does not suit sauces or freshly marinated meat, so freeze anything wet into a block first; among published Dutch reviews one buyer writes that it draws slowly and starts sealing while air is still in the bag, a common complaint about external machines, and anyone sealing many bags in a row should look at a chamber model. - Check before buying: the Amazon listing states an EU spare-part availability period of one year, shorter than the two-year legal warranty, which matters for long-term use; returns run for 30 days; the same page offers lower prices from other sellers, but those do not necessarily come with Prime delivery. Hokimi field note: divide what you want to seal into single-meal portions first, then choose the bag size. A 20 x 30 cm original bag is generous for one portion of meat or fish, so cutting roll film to the real length is cheaper; keep the inner 8 cm of the bag mouth clean and free of fat, because a greasy seam leaks more often than a weak pump does.
