What you need to know
Live in the Netherlands long enough and someone will ask whether you can skate. Natural ice is rare, so for many people the place they actually learn is the Jaap Eden rink in Amsterdam Oost: this year it marks 65 years of making ice in Amsterdam, and public skating happens on a 400-metre outdoor track from 10 October to 21 March 2027, while the indoor hall is for clubs only. On the opening weekend a ticket costs just EUR 0.65. After that an adult visit is EUR 10.60, ages 4 to 15 pay EUR 6.50 and under-4s skate free. How often you will come this season decides whether single tickets or a ride card make sense. It suits adults learning to skate, families and students. Next step: estimate your visits for the season, then buy tickets or a card online.
- When a ride card pays: the adult 10-ride card is EUR 76.30, and your first card adds a one-off EUR 8 personal card fee, EUR 84.30 in total; 84.30 / 10.60 is about 7.95, so it only beats single tickets from your 8th visit of the season. The 25-ride card is EUR 166.10, about EUR 6.96 a visit including the card fee. For ages 4 to 15 the 10-ride card is EUR 44.70, which with the card fee pays off from the 9th visit.
- Quiet weekday hours are cheaper: in off-peak hours (daluren) adults, students and over-65s get 25% off, so a single adult visit is about EUR 7.95, below the EUR 8.43 a visit a 10-ride card works out at including the card fee. Children skate for EUR 1 on Wednesday afternoons, except in school holidays. A ride card bought in 2026 stays valid until 31 December 2027, so unused rides carry over to next season.
- Skate hire needs a deposit: Waterman Sport rents skates inside the rink from EUR 8 a day, and the deposit is EUR 50 in cash or a card with your name on it, such as an OV card, student card or health insurance card; the deposit cannot be paid by card. If you are new to the Netherlands and carry no cash, bring a named card.
- Check before you go: public hours change daily and can be booked out or reserved, and the rink says the actual hours are only shown in its webshop; the info desk takes debit card (pin) only. For a family: two adults and an 8-year-old on a weekend pay 2 x 10.60 + 6.50 = EUR 27.70 in tickets, plus at least EUR 24 for three pairs of hire skates.
