The city page states the tax is 12,5 percent of the overnight price excluding VAT, and the new coalition agreement takes it to 16 percent from 2027 and 20 percent by 2031. The larger step already happened: VAT on hotel stays went from 9 to 21 percent this yea…
What you need to know
Family are coming to Amsterdam for four nights, you are booking the room, and the percentages on that bill usually arrive as a single total. Fix the base first: the city's own tax page is explicit that the overnight tax is 12,5 percent of the overnight price excluding VAT, alongside a separate day tax of EUR 15 per passenger aimed at cruise passengers on a stopover. The new coalition agreement, Jouw stad is mijn stad. Ons Amsterdam from PRO Amsterdam and D66, lifts that share to 16 percent from 2027 and then by one percentage point a year to 20 percent in 2031. Working out your own nights takes one multiplication, but the base has to be the price before VAT.
- Separate the two taxes before anything else: the overnight tax is charged on the price excluding VAT (12,5 percent now, 16 percent in 2027, 20 percent in 2031), while VAT is a second charge that NOS reports went from 9 to 21 percent on hotel stays this year. Together the burden moves from 21,5 percent last year to 41 percent in 2031.
- The sum is one step: net room price multiplied by the change in percentage points. A room at 160 euro before VAT gains 3,5 points between 12,5 and 16 percent, which is 5,60 euro a night and 22,40 across four nights. Put your own net rate in and you have your answer.
- The bigger step has already landed, though: on that same 160 euro net room, the twelve points of VAT are 19,20 euro a night, more than three times the 2027 overnight-tax step, and they are on this year's bill already.
- For scale, municipal overnight taxes across the Netherlands raise 654 million euro, 4,3 percent of 15,3 billion in municipal taxes, of which Amsterdam alone takes 275 million or over 42 percent, against 17,9 million in Den Haag and 17 million in Rotterdam. As a comparison NOS lists Los Angeles at 14 percent and Bhutan at 100 dollars, about 87 euro, per person per night.
Hokimi field note: when you book, read the net room price, the overnight tax and the VAT as three separate lines rather than one total, because only the first line changes when you change hotel; the other two are fixed shares. Which year's rate applies to nights that straddle the turn of the year is not stated on the city page, so the booking platform's terms decide it.
