Ten Schagen Thursdays bring old West Friesland back into the street

From 23 July through 3 September, Westfriese Folklore fills central Schagen on Thursdays. The colourful procession normally starts at 10:45 and the street programme can be watched free.

• The tradition has continued in Schagen for more than seventy years, with local participants maintaining dress, wagons and driving skills. The value is living heritage rather than a themed backdrop.
• Themes change weekly: music on 30 July, the open-air guest day on 6 August, children’s day on 13 August and ring riding around the church on 20 August. Pick by interest, not habit.
• On 6 August about eighty people in nineteenth-century regional dress share a traditional farm meal on Markt; visitor meal tickets cost EUR15. Watching the street is not a meal reservation.
• The day generally runs around 08:30/09:00-15:00, with the procession at 10:45. Horses, vehicles and crowds alter city-centre access, so the train to Schagen is often simpler than parking.
