Sneekweek short trip: watch 30 boat classes by day and return to the Waterpoort at night

Fleet parade 31 Jul; races 1-6 Aug

📅 Valid until 2026-08-06🕒 Published 2026-07-18🏷️ Category Local Attrac.

Deal Highlights

Europe’s largest inland regatta grew from Hardzeildag in 1814 into edition 89: Optimists and larger classes race, while town and Start Island carry the evening.

Details

The 89th Sneekweek opens with the Vlootschouw at Sneek’s Waterpoort at 21:30 on 31 July, followed by racing on the Sneekermeer from 1 to 6 August. Choose an opening-night image, a race day, or combine both.

  • The event descends from Hardzeildag, held since 1814, and became Sneekweek in 1934; that continuity explains why sailing here is civic tradition rather than a temporary festival theme.
  • Thirty classes race about two hours daily, from youth Optimist, RS Feva and Flits to Randmeer, Regenboog and windsurfers, letting spectators compare how boats use the same wind and water.
  • Public viewing is spread between Waterpoort, city and Start Island; ferries, fairground, food and selected activities cost extra. Check wind, ferry and daily start information before travelling.

Hokimi field note: For a first visit, pair opening night with the next race day: see class boats in the parade, then recognise several under sail so celebration and sport connect.
