Three Dutch water walks: engineering models, geology and peat-shaped wetlands

Natuurmonumenten highlights three summer routes shaped by water, with free route information. Choose by engineering, valley geology or wetland experience instead of selecting only the nearest distance.

• Waterloopbos used scale water models to test harbour and delta engineering. Nature has since grown over concrete and channels, so Dutch water-management history remains visible under roots and moss.
• The Geuldal route connects to naturalist Eli Heimans, whose observations at Heimansgroeve helped popularise the geology of South Limburg. This valley is not a flat-country walk transplanted south.
• De Wieden’s open water and reed beds grew from a peat-cutting landscape, and a canoe route reads the narrow channels from water level. Check footwear, slopes or boat-rental conditions for the chosen route.
