Children first study how Mauritshuis painters create depth through foreground, middle ground and distance, then paint a real or imagined holiday landscape. The Dutch workshop runs 13:30–15:00 and costs €8.50.

What you need to know

Children often place sky, mountains and people along one flat line. This Mauritshuis workshop first takes them to real collection works and asks why a landscape can feel near and far. A guide helps ages 7–12 identify foreground, middle ground and background, then each child paints either a remembered holiday view or a completely imagined land. The Dutch-language session runs 13:30–15:00 on 28, 30 and 31 July and 1 August, costs €8.50 and includes materials. Museum admission is separate if the family wants to continue through the collection afterward, while the Ooievaarspas gives a 50% workshop discount. It suits children who can participate independently in a 90-minute Dutch activity. Reserve the workshop first, then decide whether to add museum entry after it.

  • The teaching focus is foreground, middle ground and distance rather than simply copying a famous painting.
  • Children may choose a real or imagined landscape, allowing collection observation and personal story to meet in one painting.
  • The €8.50 includes materials but not a post-workshop museum visit; confirm any under-18 museum admission rule on the ticket page.
  • The session is in Dutch; follow the confirmation email for parent attendance and the exact meeting point.

Hokimi field note: Let the child bring one travel photo they want to reinvent; a concrete memory often makes starting easier than inventing everything on the spot.
