Meet the cook before boarding the real submarine

A submarine can easily become one enormous metal object in a gallery: children see switches but cannot picture how people worked in such narrow rooms. The thirty-minute Geheime Dieptes performance follows cook Bakker aboard, through a NATO exercise and into the routines below the surface. It plays every Sunday and Monday in August at 12:30, 13:30 and 14:30, after which visitors can step into the real Tonijn at the Marinemuseum. Theatre supplies a person and pressure before the machinery, so bunks, kitchen and corridors gain meaning. The show is included with valid museum admission and is recommended from age five. Families combining it with other holiday activities should leave breathing room; a real submarine’s tight spaces and sound can also consume attention.
