LUMINISCENCE in Lille cathedral: EUR 29 for an adult on Wednesday and Thursday, EUR 45 on the nights the orchestra plays

The cathedral in Lille took more than a century to build and only got its west front in 1999, which makes it one of the last great cathedrals in Europe to be finished. This autumn the building itself is the stage: LUMINISCENCE's new work, L'Odyssee Celeste, throws three-dimensional projection across the whole nave, from the foot of the pillars to the top of the vaults, and tells nine centuries of the building's own story, from the medieval marshes of the old town through building sites interrupted by war to that bold opening in 1999. It is rated 4.69 from 317 reviews on Fever and runs to 31 October.

It is not a film played once. The evening opens with the audience walking freely through the side aisles while the chapels light up one by one and a soloist plays among them, Raphael Foulon on electric violin or David Bultel on vibraphone; only then does everyone sit down in the nave for the 360-degree show. Every performance is sung live by the Choeur de Chambre Septentrion over a recorded score played by the Slovak National Philharmonic Orchestra; on a handful of October weekends the LUMINISCENCE orchestra joins under conductor Pierre-Alexis Touzeau, together with the cathedral organ played by Denis Comtet or Ghislain Leroy, and the whole evening becomes live. The producer counts close to two million spectators worldwide.

The price has to be built by hand. The EUR 15 on the page is the child fare for ages 3 to 10; the lowest adult fare is EUR 29, in the Argent block on a Wednesday or Thursday. On those choir-only nights Argent costs EUR 29 for an adult, EUR 20 for a student, EUR 15 for a child of 3 to 10, EUR 23 for over-65s, visitors with reduced mobility and their companions, and EUR 26 a head for groups of six or more; Or costs EUR 39, EUR 27, EUR 20 and EUR 35. On the October nights with the orchestra, Argent is EUR 45, EUR 32, EUR 23, EUR 36 and EUR 41, and Or is EUR 55, EUR 39, EUR 28 and EUR 50. Every ticket then carries a booking fee of EUR 0.99. So the method is to pick the table by the date, sort each person into a fare by age and status, add them up, and add EUR 0.99 per ticket. Two adults and two children in Argent on a Wednesday come to EUR 88 plus EUR 3.96, so EUR 91.96; the same four on an orchestra Friday come to EUR 136 plus EUR 3.96, so EUR 139.96, a gap of EUR 48. Gather six adults and the Wednesday Argent fare drops by EUR 3 each, which is EUR 18 for the group.

• Choose the block backwards. Or sits from the middle to the back of the nave and buys the panoramic view of the whole vault, which is why it costs more; Argent runs from the middle of the nave to the choir and is the closest to the singers and the soloist, yet it is cheaper. Come for the projection and Or earns its money; come for the live voices and Argent is the better seat, although Or ticket holders also receive a collector card from the Luminiscence series. • The orchestra nights are 2, 3, 9, 10, 16, 23, 30 and 31 October; every other date is choir only and uses the cheaper table above. The Dutch autumn break falls on 10 to 18 October in region Noord and 17 to 25 October in Midden and Zuid, so the cheap nights inside those weeks are 14 and 15 October and 21 and 22 October.
