Castlefest turns the Keukenhof estate into a four-day fantasy world
Four days inside a fantasy world
Deal Highlights
The protagonists are not confined to stages: elves, pirates, Vikings and wizards move through the woods as costume, craft, music and the Wicker Ritual turn watching into joining a world.
Details
From 30 July to 2 August, Castlefest fills the Keukenhof Castle Estate in Lisse with multiple stages, academy sessions, makers, writers, markets and characters throughout the day.
- Founded in 2005, Castlefest’s sold-out 20th edition drew about 55,000 visitors in 2025 and relied on around 800 volunteers. Its scale still depends on a community that makes and performs the atmosphere.
- Music runs from pagan folk and world music to medieval rock, beside themed food, historic crafts and Castlefest Academy. Visitors without costumes still have a clear programme to explore.
- Gates open around 10:00 on all four days, with late finishes Thursday through Saturday and about 20:00 Sunday. Children’s Kingdom runs 31 July-2 August but is not childcare.
- The Wicker Ritual is a communal climax built by visitors, bands and crew, not merely a fire effect. Ticket types and availability change, so choose a day around must-see programme items.
Hokimi field note: Ask before photographing a person in costume; detailed work is not a public prop. With children, mark quiet space, toilets and the exit route before the crowds build.
