The BroekerVeiling Streekmarkt is free on 12 and 13 September, with over forty stalls and a separate 20.75-euro museum ticket

On 12 and 13 September the Museum BroekerVeiling in Broek op Langedijk lends its grounds to a market: more than forty stalls of local beer, honey, bread, vegetables, mushrooms, cheese and dried meat, a bird-of-prey demonstration on both days, and free face painting for children. Getting into that market costs 0 euro, and so does parking. The museum stays open on the same days, but that is a separate ticket at 20.75 euro for an adult. One free half and one paid half share the same site with no fence between them, so the thing to settle before you set off is which half you are actually walking into that day, and whether you are willing to pay again for the other one.

Start with whether the Familiepas earns its price. Two adults and two children bought separately come to 2 x 20.75 plus 2 x 10.75 = 63.00 euro against 49.00 for the Familiepas, so 14.00 saved and 12.25 a head. But the Familiepas is defined as exactly two adults and two children, so one adult with two children pays 20.75 plus 2 x 10.75 = 42.25 euro separately, which is 6.75 euro below the Familiepas. That group would be paying extra to buy it. The rule is short: add your own group at single prices, and if the total is under 49.00 do not buy the Familiepas.

The second number is one the museum hands you itself: the programme takes three hours. With a stated duration the ticket converts into an hourly price, and 20.75 divided by 3 is 6.92 euro an hour, a sum most museums make impossible because they never publish a length. It also fixes the day's timetable. Market and museum both close at 17.00, so those three hours mean walking in by 14.00 at the latest, and an hour or two earlier if you want to do both halves.

The third number is the threshold on the discount cards. A CJP card is 16.00 euro, 4.75 below the full ticket, while a Museumkaart or an ICOM card is free, which means a Museumkaart saves exactly 20.75 euro on this particular day. Museumkaart holders are in fact the best-placed group this weekend: the market was free anyway and the museum half is free too, so the only money spent is at the stalls.

The last point is for anyone new to the Netherlands: the entrance, the restaurant and the auction here all take cards only. Carrying enough cash is not the same as carrying enough money. This is increasingly normal in Dutch museums and rarely spelled out as plainly as it is here.

Hokimi field note: the market falls on a Saturday and a Sunday, and the museum is closed on Mondays anyway, so a quieter return visit for the museum alone starts at Tuesday 15 September. Friday 18 September is the day to avoid entirely, because the museum is shut all day.
