Pick-your-own near Utrecht: free entry, €5 parking, and the sum per kilo

The orchard at Marsdijk 5 fills up with pushchairs on six September mornings: Boerderij Nieuw Slagmaat opens for self-picking on 4, 5 and 6 September and again on 11, 12 and 13 September, daily from 10:00 to 16:00, with a late round on 18 and 19 September. On the trees are four apple varieties - Elstar, Pinova, Jonagold and Goudreinette - plus Conference and Gieser Wildeman pears, kiwi berries and pumpkins. Entry costs nothing and you do not have to sign up, but the field opposite the farm charges €5 per car. It suits families who want a child to see where an apple actually comes from, and anyone stocking a whole crate at once. Decide one thing before you leave: how many kilos you intend to carry home.

• This is not an orchard you only look at. The farm keeps its shop, tea house and maize maze open, so you can stay on for lunch, and on both September weekends the ponies, hay wagon, farm obstacle course and petting area run alongside the picking - a child's attention will not run out after half an hour.
• The address is Marsdijk 5, 3981 HE Bunnik, in the province of Utrecht. Picking days are 4, 5 and 6 September and 11, 12 and 13 September, with a late round on 18 and 19 September, daily 10:00-16:00. Entry is free and parking is €5 per car. The farm's own August page set summer apples at €2.00 per kilo; no kilo price is published for the September days, so ask at the gate before you start.
• Best for families with children from about three, for anyone who wants a full crate of apples in one trip, and for households without a car who can share one: the €5 is charged per car, not per person, so two families in one car halve it.
• Divide the €5 by the kilos you plan to pick: three kilos adds €1.67 per kilo, ten kilos adds only €0.50. Add that to the kilo price on the day and set it beside the per-kilo apple price in your usual supermarket - that comparison is the one no farm page will make for you.

Hokimi field note: the real price of self-picking is the sign at the gate plus the parking spread across your kilos, so either go less often and pick more, or share a car with neighbours.
