Mavis Staples brings living soul history to Amsterdam

When Mavis Staples enters the Concertgebouw, she brings more than a catalogue of famous songs. Her voice began in Chicago churches; she had a recording contract at fourteen and later carried gospel, soul and memories of the American civil-rights movement into popular culture with The Staple Singers. At 86, after 75 years on stage, she is not simply revisiting history. She is evidence that the history can still speak in the present. On 10 August she and her band play the Grote Zaal from 20:00 until approximately 21:05.
