London Zoo's Winnie-the-Pooh trail opens 2 October: a northern-region autumn-break weekday saves a family of four EUR 16

Schools in the Dutch northern region start their autumn break on 10 October, while the middle and southern regions follow a week later, on 17 October. For families thinking of a London trip in that week, the difference is written on the ticket: in London Zoo's price calendar on Tiqets, every day from 17 October to 1 November is a peak day, while before that only weekends are.

The zoo sits in Regent's Park and is the world's oldest scientific zoo, rated 4.5 from 3,451 reviews on Tiqets. The reason to go this autumn is Winnie-the-Pooh. During the First World War the Canadian army vet Harry Colebourn bought a black bear cub in White River, Ontario, named her Winnie after his home town of Winnipeg and brought her to England in 1914; before his brigade left for France he left Winnie in the care of London Zoo, and donated her permanently in 1919. Winnie lived at the Mappin Terraces, and among her regular visitors were A.A. Milne and his son Christopher Robin, who went on to rename his own teddy bear Winnie. 2026 marks 100 years of Winnie-the-Pooh and 200 years of the Zoological Society of London, and from 2 October to 1 November the zoo lays out a storybook trail whose illustrated pages tell a new tale of Pooh and Eeyore, left behind at the zoo by Christopher Robin, on a night-time adventure.

The sum: (peak price - weekday price) x number of people = what a weekday saves. On the Tiqets calendar an adult is EUR 32.30 on a weekday and EUR 37.08 at peak, EUR 4.78 apart; a child aged 3 to 15 is EUR 22.62 against EUR 25.88, EUR 3.26 apart; under-threes go free. Two adults and two children therefore keep 2 x 4.78 + 2 x 3.26 = EUR 16.08. Northern-region families still have the five weekdays from 12 to 16 October at the weekday price; the whole break for the middle and southern regions falls inside the peak, so that money cannot be saved and only the timing can be chosen. Once the trail is done, children usually want the boardwalks of Land of the Lions for the Asiatic lions, or the waterfall in Monkey Valley with colobus monkeys leaping through the canopy; that part is remembered longer than the price, though the trail is outdoors and October in London calls for rain gear.
