Fenix brings food, performance, art and migration stories from Indisch, Indonesian, Moluccan and Papuan communities.

What you need to know

A pasar is a market, but in diaspora memory it is also a way of meeting: recognising a spice, hearing an old song and trading family stories beside a food stall. On 15 and 16 August, Rotterdam migration museum Fenix brings Floating Pasar into its harbour warehouse for the first time, running from ten in the morning until ten at night. The programme refuses to reduce culture to a few “exotic” dishes. Music, art, conversation and food sit beside one another, allowing creators with Indisch, Indonesian, Moluccan and Papuan backgrounds to speak for themselves about migration, home and the next generation.

Fenix stands on Katendrecht, where generations of travellers once left or arrived through the port of Rotterdam. Putting a pasar inside this building shifts the emphasis from shopping to movement: why a dish changes in the Netherlands, how a song carries language across the sea and how an artwork repairs family memory. The general two-day programme is free. A €20 combination adds museum admission and a Moluccan meal, while an artist talk on 16 August requires its own ticket. “Zomerfestival” showed rising relative interest in Trends, used here only because it truthfully describes a summer cultural festival.

  • Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 August, 10:00-22:00, on Fenix Plein and inside the museum; general admission is free.
  • Food, music, art and spoken stories centre several Southeast Asian diaspora communities.
  • A €20 combination includes museum entry and a Moluccan meal; selected talks need separate tickets.
  • Address: Dolf Henkesplein 1, 3072 LN Rotterdam.

Hokimi field note: inspect the day schedule before choosing lunch or dinner time. Visitors who only want the pasar do not need the museum-and-meal package. Popular dishes may sell out, and anyone with allergies should ask each stall directly about ingredients.
