Dutch Bank Helpdesk Scam Alert

Banks never collect valuables

🕒 Published 2026-07-23🏷️ Category Recommended

Deal Highlights

A police report on 10 July links a 15-year-old suspect to seventeen bank-helpdesk fraud cases; hang up and call the bank through a number you find yourself.

Details

If someone in the Netherlands calls as a bank security employee, hang up first even when the caller knows a name or address. A police report dated 10 July says a fifteen-year-old suspect is linked to seventeen cases in which victims handed over jewellery and phones worth more than €30,000. The method is therefore still actively used.

A real bank will not ask for a PIN or online-banking password, send a courier to collect bank cards, jewellery or phones, or require remote-control software. Fraudsters create urgency and may spoof the number shown on the screen, so a familiar caller ID is not proof.

For people building a weekend in the Netherlands, this is easiest to use as a practical stop rather than a vague inspiration. Check the live booking page before leaving, allow time for the final admission or programme start, and compare public transport with parking. Families should also confirm the language, age guidance and whether food or a stroller is allowed.

  • Call back using the number on the bank card or the bank's official website.
  • If money or valuables were lost, contact the bank first and preserve calls, chats and payment records.
  • Call police on 0900-8844; use 112 if a suspect is present or danger is immediate.

Hokimi field note: Agree on a family code word so relatives who are less confident in Dutch always verify any supposed bank collection.
