Dirk week 39 runs to 26 pages, with week offers valid from Wednesday 23 to Tuesday 29 September. The cover actually prints three periods: one group of chance buys from Sunday 20 September while stocks last, the week offers from Wednesday to Tuesday, and weeke…

What you need to know

On Wednesday afternoon you are buying beer and snacks for a weekend get-together and the week’s vegetables at the same time. Dirk week 39 runs to 26 pages, and its biggest box is every Milka bar of 85 to 100 gram at 0,85 euro, against a former 1,45 to 2,15, flashed at up to 60 per cent. Up to refers to the 2,15 bar: 0,85 divided by 2,15 is about 40 per cent of the price. If yours used to cost 1,45, the discount is closer to 41 per cent.

The first thing to read is that the cover prints three different validity periods at once: chance buys from Sunday 20 September while stocks last, week offers from Wednesday 23 to Tuesday 29 September, and weekend treats only from Friday 25 to Sunday 27 September. Boxes in the same issue are not all live on the same day, so on a Wednesday trip the weekend lines are not yet available.

The three highlighted lines map onto the three roles in one party shop:

  • Milka chocoladereep 85-100 gram at € 0,85. This covers the children and the guests who skip the beer. Sizes run from 85 to 100 gram, so per 100 gram the 100 gram bar is the better buy and the 85 gram bar works out at about 1,00 euro.
  • Hertog Jan pils of 0.0 24 flessen à 30 cl at € 8,99, flagged 52% KORTING. Twenty-four bottles make 7,2 litres, so about 0,37 euro a bottle and 1,25 euro a litre; regular and alcohol-free cost the same, which helps when some guests are driving home.
  • Lenor fresh air 504 ml at € 3,99, useful for the tablecloth and towels after the party, at about 0,79 euro per 100 ml. Softener keeps well, so a household that uses it anyway can restock this week.

The sum is total price divided by total litres, or price divided by grams times 100. Beer by the litre and chocolate by the 100 gram is what lets you compare with the pack you usually buy. The produce pages take the same approach: Dutch sprouts 750 gram at 1,29, chicory 500 gram at 0,99, whole pumpkins at 0,99 each (from 1,99), large mandarins 1,5 kilo at 2,99 and Zespri organic gold kiwis, four for 2,99 (from 3,49).

The flyer names no stock per branch, and the first group on the cover says while stocks last. A crate of beer is heavy, so plan the car or a quiet branch, and wait until Friday for the weekend boxes.
