For a weekend ride in another part of the country there are two routes: rent an OV-fiets on arrival, or carry your own bike onto the train. NS conditions put renting at EUR 4.80 per 24 hours, two bikes per subscription, and a EUR 10 charge for returning to a…

What you need to know

On a Saturday morning heading for Zeeland or the Veluwe, the decision comes down to two options: rent a bike after you arrive, or carry the one at home onto the train. Most people choose on instinct, assuming renting is expensive and hauling the bike is the thrifty move, or the reverse. The two routes carry entirely different restrictions, and both sets are written into the NS conditions. Renting an OV-fiets costs EUR 4.80 per 24 hours. Bringing your own means buying a Fietskaart Dal on top of your own train fare, and only one bicycle per traveller may come along.

What tips the choice is not the headline price but three limits. First, an OV-fiets needs a personal OV-chipkaart carrying the free OV-fiets subscription, or NS Flex; an anonymous card cannot rent one, and that is not something you can fix on the platform. Second, one subscription rents at most two bicycles, so a party of three needs a second registered card. Third, the bike goes back to the same rental point, and returning it elsewhere costs EUR 10, while renting beyond three days adds EUR 5 a day, bringing it to EUR 9.80, for a maximum of seven days.

  • Count heads first. One subscription covers two bikes, so a third rider needs their own registered card, and that limit surfaces on the morning of the trip more often than the price does
  • Then look at both ends of the journey. If you also want to ride to your home station, your own bike wins, because an OV-fiets is picked up and returned at the station. If you only ride at the destination, renting removes the carrying entirely
  • Check the clock. On weekdays a bicycle may travel before 6:30, between 9:00 and 16:00 and after 18:30, while weekends, public holidays and the whole of July and August are open all day, though the Fietskaart Dal is still required
  • A folding bike is the third option. Folded down to 45 by 86 by 80 centimetres or smaller it needs no Fietskaart Dal and faces no time restriction at all, so it costs nothing

Hokimi field note: the sum runs like this. Take the current Fietskaart Dal price from the NS order page, multiply by the number of riders, and set that against EUR 4.80 times the number of bikes you would rent. Then ask whether anyone is coming home from a different station, and if so add EUR 10 to the rental side, which usually flips the answer. Rental conditions are at source 1 and the time windows and folding-bike dimensions at source 2.
