Hydra Quartet recasts Adele's vocal drama as a conversation between four string instruments. From Hello and Someone Like You to Skyfall, familiar songs gain new detail in the intimate De Kleine Willem theatre.
What you need to know
Adele's songs usually drive emotion through the voice; in a string quartet, the breathing space, pauses and harmonies come forward. Surrounded by candlelight at De Kleine Willem, Hydra Quartet makes the choruses work without trying to imitate the singer.
The programme moves from Hello, Rumour Has It and Make You Feel My Love to Skyfall, Set Fire to the Rain, Easy On Me and Rolling in the Deep. De Kleine Willem is a small theatre on Langestraat, keeping the audience close enough to hear how four instruments divide the melody.
It fits a date, birthday or night with a friend who knows the songs, all within 60 minutes. New listeners can still follow the melodic changes, but anyone expecting a vocalist or a full pop-stage production should choose differently.
- Address: De Kleine Willem, Langestraat 45, 7511 HB Enschede.
- Tickets currently start at EUR 34.50; the concert lasts 60 minutes, doors open 45 minutes before, and late entry is not allowed.
- Ages 8+; under-16s need an adult. The venue is wheelchair accessible and seats are first-come within the booked zone.
Hokimi field note: buy together and arrive early if you want adjacent seats. After Someone Like You, listen for how the four players trade the role normally held by Adele's voice.
