Beurer TL 35 daylight lamp at EUR 52: the 10,000 lux is measured at 13 cm

A Dutch November has sunrise close to half past eight and darkness before the end of the working day, and a first winter here is what sends most people looking for a daylight lamp. The Beurer TL 35 is the most common one on the shelf: EUR 52.00 on Amazon.nl, rated 4.5 from 439 reviews, in stock, and the number one seller in the SAD lights category. Model 10065, 6.5 x 21.6 x 36.6 cm and 520 g, registered as a medical device. Beurer publishes three colour temperatures - Active 4300 K, Therapy 6500 K and Relax 3000 K - and states that the 10,000 lux therapy applies to the Therapy setting.

That 10,000 lux is the number worth doing arithmetic on, because the same page says how far away it was measured: about 13 cm. Illuminance falls with the square of distance, so at 26 cm you have a quarter of it, 2,500 lux. To get the same dose back you multiply the time by four: 30 minutes becomes 120. And 120 minutes is exactly the ceiling of this lamp's own timer, which makes 26 cm the furthest its timer can still compensate for. Put in the distance you actually plan to sit at and that tells you far more than the 10,000 does.

It is worth being precise about the saving, because two different reference prices are in play. Amazon shows -4 percent, measured against its own recent median of EUR 53.99, so the difference is EUR 1.99. Beurer's recommended price is EUR 77.99 and its own shop sells the lamp at EUR 54.99. This is therefore not a deep cut; it is EUR 2.99 below the manufacturer's own shop, and anyone happy to wait two to five working days pays roughly the same either way.

Two things decide whether it fits how you would actually use it. First, the four dimmer steps and the three colour temperatures are not all therapy: Beurer attaches the 10,000 lux only to Therapy at 6500 K, so dimming it or switching to Active or Relax is no longer that dose. Second, the lit surface is only 14 by 20 cm. That size makes it a lamp for just behind the keyboard, directly in front of you, rather than something to place across the room, where the inverse-square fall-off turns it into an ordinary desk light.

Hokimi field note: measure the real distance from your eyes to where the lamp would stand before buying. 13 cm is much closer than most people picture, almost against your face; if your desk only allows 40 cm, this lamp's timer cannot make that up and you want a model with a larger lit surface.
