On Monday morning you want to buy the week’s vegetables, soup and cleaning products in one go. ALDI’s week 39 flyer runs to 31 pages and the cover says it is valid from Monday 21 to Sunday 27 September. Note, though, that the boxes in one issue do not all start on the same day: each box has its own vanaf date in the corner. Produce and most groceries start on the 21st, some lines on Wednesday the 23rd, Golden Seafood fried fish pieces and others on Friday the 25th, and a batch of home goods only on Saturday the 26th. On a Monday trip the later boxes are not on the shelf yet.

The produce pages are the most useful part of this issue and all show a former price and a discount: green beans 500 gram at 0,99 (from 1,49, 33 per cent), Conference pears 1 kilo at 1,39 (from 1,79, 22 per cent), Gala children’s apples 1 kilo at 1,69 (from 1,99), carrots 1 kilo at 0,89 (from 1,29, 31 per cent), extra large floury potatoes 3 kilo at 2,49 (from 3,49, 28 per cent) and avocados in a two-pack at 1,99 (from 2,49).

Of the three highlighted lines, one covers meals, one cleaning and one the weekend:

• Unox Soep 570 ml at € 1,59. A 570 ml pack feeds roughly two people, and with some bread it makes the easiest midweek dinner; soup keeps, so two or three in the cupboard cover the evenings when time is short.
• Dettol Allesreiniger 1 liter at € 1,99. An all-purpose cleaner for kitchen worktops, bathroom and floors, diluted for most jobs so a litre lasts a long time, handy for a household that wants to restock without a separate trip.
• Hertog Jan Bier 0.5 liter at € 1,15, flagged -23%. This is a single half-litre can, about 2,30 euro a litre; for a weekend of one or two drinks rather than a crate, buying single cans keeps you from overbuying.

The sum is pack price divided by kilos, compared per kilo. Green beans at 0,99 divided by 0,5 come to 1,98 euro a kilo, red pointed peppers 500 gram at 1,99 to 3,98 a kilo, and potatoes at 2,49 divided by 3 to about 0,83. Multiply by the kilos your household really eats in a week to see what the produce costs in total, and whether a 3 kilo bag of potatoes gets eaten before it sprouts.

The flyer names no stock per branch and several boxes say while stocks last. If you want the boxes that start on the 25th or 26th, plan a second visit on Friday or Saturday.
