By the end of August the Dutch evenings already ask for something over the duvet. In a rented flat the set that comes out of the cupboard is usually last year's, stiff at the seams after a few washes, and that is where the thought of replacing it starts.

Each price sits next to the name, so measure your own mattress and duvet first, because the numbers only help once they match.

If an old cushion pad is already in the house, a new outer changes how the whole sofa reads, and in a rental that is one of the few things you can change without touching the furniture.
• Hotel Royal jersey hoeslaken (€ 5,99): jersey is knitted cotton, so it sits closer to the mattress than a woven sheet and creases less. A fitted sheet is the layer that goes into the wash every couple of weeks, and the point of a spare is that the bed is not stripped on laundry day.
