A EUR 19.00 day ticket at the Nieuwegein climbing centre does not include rope climbing

Dutch winters push outdoor sport indoors, and a climbing centre is one of the few places open all year that never depends on the weather. The National Climbing Center sits at Iepenhoeve 41 in Nieuwegein, open 08:30 to 23:00 on weekdays and 08:30 to 22:00 at weekends. It publishes its own 2026 rate sheet, so the arithmetic is unusually clean: a day ticket is EUR 19.00 for 25 and over, EUR 17.00 for 18 to 24 and EUR 15.00 up to 17. The number worth checking first, though, is not the price but what that day ticket actually buys.

The centre's own location page states it plainly: to climb on a rope you need an NKBV climbing proficiency certificate. Turn up without one, buy the EUR 19.00 day ticket, and the rope walls are still closed to you. Bouldering needs no certificate at all, so you can walk in and climb. For ropes there are two routes in: a single KVB-AB autobelay lesson, at most 60 minutes, from age 14 and with no experience required, or the KVB-IT toprope course of 4 sessions of 2 hours with the certificate included. Almost nobody writes this down in Chinese, and it decides whether a first visit reaches the wall you came for.

The rate sheet carries a claim worth testing against its own price list: climb about once a week and the membership already pays for itself. Run it and you get two different answers. Fifty-two single day tickets at EUR 19.00 come to EUR 988.00, so the annual at EUR 907.50 is indeed EUR 80.50 cheaper and the claim holds. The same sentence fails for the rolling monthly, where 82.50 times twelve is EUR 990.00, which is EUR 2.00 more than simply paying at the door. Identical frequency, and the yearly saves eighty euro while the monthly loses two.

Here is the sum to fill in with your own number: write down how many times you will genuinely go in a year, then hold it against the three prices. The annual breaks even at 907.50 divided by 19.00, which is 47.8 visits, so roughly once a week. A ten-visit card works out at 171.00 over ten, or EUR 17.10 a visit, EUR 1.90 below the door price, but it expires after a year and is void at any other branch. Below about ten visits a year the plain day ticket wins, which is the opposite of what most membership pricing trains people to assume.
