One fake tax text can be part of 740,000

When police entered the suspect’s home, hundreds of messages were still being sent and victim details continued arriving. Smishing is therefore not one badly written spam text but an assembly line testing who clicks under pressure. Police say at least 740,000 related messages were sent between 1 June and 4 July. From 14–20 July the sender impersonated Belastingdienst, Kamer van Koophandel and Microsoft. Similar scripts mimic bank cards, parcel fees or relatives needing urgent payment. This applies to anyone receiving Dutch texts, especially people helping relatives with bills, business registration or digital tasks. Spelling errors are not a sufficient test because imitation pages can look polished. Taken together, these details turn a listing into a reason to go: the place, the people and the timing create a scene that cannot simply be replaced by another generic day out. The question is what visitors will notice and remember.

Before deciding, look at the rhythm of the visit: who will stay engaged, which moment is easiest to miss, and whether price or booking rules change the plan. The useful thirty-second check is to interrupt urgency, never use the text link, open the official app or type the site yourself, and contact the institution through an independently found number. If bank details were entered, secure the account and call the bank first, then report it.

Save bank, tax-service and family numbers and teach relatives to hang up and redial independently. The more urgent the message sounds, the more important a second channel becomes. Recheck the official page for availability, programme changes, weather and transport before leaving. Keeping about twenty minutes free for walking, queues or finding the entrance usually protects the experience better than filling every gap.
