Independent design, jewellery, illustration and craft take over Museumplein for a free eight-hour Sunday market.

What you need to know

Museumplein usually tells stories through art already selected for museum collections. Museum Market returns some of that choice to the street. On 16 August, independent designers and makers trade from ten in the morning until six, with no department store or gallery between the object and its creator. A conversation may begin with the glaze on a cup or the casting of a ring and lead into the experiments and failures behind it. Even without buying, the rows offer a quick reading of contemporary Dutch design and the way small studios combine usefulness, humour and sustainable materials on one table.

The market appears on the third Sunday of each month, surrounded by the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Stedelijk Museum. That setting makes it feel less like a souvenir fair and more like a temporary outdoor design corridor: look at canonical work inside, then compare how today’s small brands respond to colour, typography, domestic objects and city life. In the NL Trends comparison, “kunstmarkt” showed clearer relative interest from late July into early August, so this candidate received a tie-break within its quota. Rising queries naming other towns were excluded.

  • Sunday 16 August, 10:00-18:00, on Museumplein in Amsterdam.
  • Entry is free; stalls typically cover art, design, jewellery, illustration and small lifestyle labels.
  • Museum Market runs on the third Sunday of each month and has published later 2026 dates.
  • Location: Museumplein, 1071 DJ Amsterdam; public transport is the practical option.

Hokimi field note: leave major purchases until a second circuit and use the first to compare makers and materials. Outdoor stalls are weather-sensitive, so carry compact rain protection. Payment methods differ by seller; have both a bank card and phone ready.
