You want a whole piece of beef, or a kilo of shellfish to portion out at home, and the first figure in this Makro flyer usually sits well below the supermarket. Every line of these six pages actually prints two prices, though: one large dark figure, and a much smaller red line beneath it. The cover states the window: GELDIG VAN DINSDAG 15 T/M MAANDAG 21 SEPTEMBER.

The large figure is the wholesale price before VAT; the small red one is the amount with VAT included. Checking all seven lines gives the same gap every time: sea bream fillet at 22,99 against 25,06 euro a kilo, haddock fillet at 14,99 against 16,34, skate wings at 11,99 against 13,07, a one-kilo tub of cockles at 9,99 against 10,89, an 800 g bag of scallops at 29,99 against 32,69, Scottish beef featherblade at 22,99 against 25,06 and Scottish bavette at 20,99 against 22,88. The sum is simply large figure times 1,09 equals small figure. Nine per cent is the Dutch reduced rate on food, so run that multiplication once before holding the page next to a supermarket shelf label.

The offers split into three groups by the unit they are priced in:

• Fish priced by the kilo: haddock fillet with skin, graded 200 to 400 g, at 14,99 euro a kilo, 16,34 with VAT, down from 17,99; skate wings at 11,99 euro a kilo, 13,07 with VAT, down from 14,49. The scale decides here, which suits a household buying once and portioning into the freezer, and both are white fish whose price moves a good deal through the year.
• Shellfish priced by the pack: cockles in a one-kilo tub at 9,99 euro, 10,89 with VAT, down from 11,99; scallops in an 800 g bag at 29,99 euro, 32,69 with VAT, down from 34,99. The second needs one more division to compare: 32,69 divided by 0,8 is about 40,86 euro a kilo with VAT, the dearest line in the flyer.
• Beef sold as a piece of roughly two kilos: Scottish prime featherblade at 22,99 euro a kilo, 25,06 with VAT, down from 27,99; Scottish prime bavette at 20,99 euro a kilo, 22,88 with VAT, down from 26,99. Both are marked as around 2 kilos, so the till figure is close to double the kilo price, near fifty euro for one piece. Decide on freezer room and how you will cook it first.

One further line is the sea bream fillet, a tray of ten pieces of about 100 g each, priced at 22,99 euro a kilo, 25,06 with VAT, down from 27,99. A tray comes to nearly a kilo, so around twenty-five euro, a quantity that suits cooking for guests rather than dinner for two.

Worth noting: the flyer gives dates and prices but says nothing about stock per branch, whether anything needs ordering ahead, or whether the fish arrives fresh or frozen. The two beef lines read ca. 2 kilo, so the real weight is settled on the scale and the till figure will differ. Before setting out, convert the lines you actually want using the sum above, then put them next to the shelf price of the shop you normally use.
