Eye What is Film?: operate image machines and step onto a green screen

Daily 10-19; Museumkaart valid

🕒 Published 2026-07-16🏷️ Category Local Attrac.

Deal Highlights

Magic lanterns, a mutoscope, flipbooks and green screen experiments rebuild cinema from the question of how still images begin to move.

Details

Eye Filmmuseum’s What is Film? playground opens daily from 10:00 to 19:00 in Amsterdam. Entry is included with a film or exhibition ticket and the Museumkaart is valid; it suits a rainy family day, so check hours and allow at least an hour.

  • Moving images are the protagonist: a mutoscope, kinamo and magic lantern reveal how different machines created motion before and after cinema began.
  • Children can make a flipbook, operate the Film Catcher, enter mini cinemas and use a green screen, changing viewing into physical participation.
  • Interactive stations may have queues; do the most wanted machine first instead of squeezing the visit into ten minutes before a screening.

Hokimi field note: Ask how a still picture starts moving before the visit and again afterwards; explaining one mechanism is more valuable than ticking off every station.
