Elburg gives its fortress streets to walkers

Elburg still shows its compact defensive plan. Vestingdagen does not squeeze everything into one venue: squares, harbour, church and lanes become the stage, so the walk between activities is part of the experience. On 29 July and several August Wednesdays, markets, children’s stalls, music and heritage sights spread through the fortified town for an easy ticket-free day trip.

• General access is free, while individual museums, towers or boat activities may charge separately.
• The programme is spread across town; start with the official map or visitor centre rather than one street address.
• Historic paving can slow pushchairs and mobility aids, so keep the route realistic.
