Bloemenpark Appeltern in Gelderland holds a chrysanthemum weekend on 3 and 4 October, showing hardy garden chrysanthemums in autumn borders at the normal price: 16.95 euro online from age 13 (17.95 at the gate), children up to 12 free. The park closes on 1 No…

What you need to know

On 3 and 4 October Bloemenpark Appeltern, a garden park in the Gelderland countryside, holds its Chrysantenfestijn: this spring the park planted Chrysanthemum indicum, koreanum and rubellum, the kinds that survive in a garden bed, to show that an autumn border can still be full of flowers, next to other late bloomers and ornamental grasses. Entry is the normal price, 16.95 euro online from age 13, free for children up to 12. The park closes for the year on 1 November, so early October is one of the last chances this season, and an annual ticket runs one year from the day you buy it. It suits families who want a walk with something to look at, and anyone with a balcony or garden. Next step: pick a date and buy tickets online, then decide on the annual ticket. • Why chrysanthemums: the park notes that in the Netherlands the chrysanthemum is mostly a cut flower, a patio pot or a memorial plant and is rarely grown as a garden perennial; the weekend puts it back into a border alongside other autumn flowers and grasses. There are chrysanthemum clubs around the country where you can collect cuttings in spring. (source 1)
  • When and where: in 2026 the park is open from 14 March to 1 November, daily 10:00 to 17:30; 31 October and 1 November are the closing weekend. The chrysanthemum weekend costs nothing extra, and annual-ticket holders enter free. (source 5, source 1)
  • Who it suits: children up to 12 need no ticket, there is a natural play area called Adventure Island and live entertainment for young children at weekends, and about 80 per cent of the park works with a pushchair, wheelchair or mobility scooter; wheelchairs can be borrowed against a token deposit but not reserved. Dogs on a lead are welcome. (source 4, source 5)
  • Before you go: the adult ticket is 1 euro cheaper online than at the gate; discount vouchers can only be used at the ticket desk, not online. Parking is paid separately. (source 2, source 4)

Do the sum: how many visits this year? Day tickets = adults x 16.95 euro x visits; an annual ticket = adults x 44.95 euro, with children up to 12 free either way. Two visits cost 33.90, less than the annual ticket; the third brings it to 50.85, and the annual ticket wins. Another route: the park says that buying an annual ticket after a visit takes 10 euro off, so buy a 16.95 day ticket for the chrysanthemum weekend and upgrade for 34.95 before you leave, 51.90 in total for a full year from that day, including the closing weekend and next year's whole season. If you will not be back next spring, keep it to the day ticket. (source 2, source 3, source 5)
